Is it ok to mention Christmas yet? Plus everything you need to know about this year’s festive décor trends.
At Strongvox, we like to keep abreast of the latest looks in the world of interior design, so we’ve been researching this year’s most popular Christmas decorating trends. We’ve uncovered an eclectic mix of décor schemes from cosy Scandi to Art Deco chic. Discover the key elements of each and read our styling tips on how to create the look in your home.
Like it or not, the Christmas countdown has begun! Whether you face the task of bringing Christmas home for the first time with limited funds, or you have got Christmas off to a pat and have money to burn, we’ll share some inspiration to get you started on your Christmas décor journey, including some useful styling tips along the way! But first… The big question…
When is it ok to mention the ‘C’ word?
A hot topic for debate: when is it acceptable to start talking about Christmas? A quick survey amongst our employees at Strongvox revealed a range of answers, from “once the school term starts in September “to ”after Halloween”, and even “not before December 1st”!
That said, it does appear that more people are planning earlier for Christmas this year. Some major UK retailers, like John Lewis, got the ball rolling back in July, sharing their decorating trends and reporting that early sales of baubles and trees were up more than 200% on last year.
If thoughts of chestnuts roasting on an open fire are already mulling around your head, then this Strongvox guide to five Christmas decorating trends is perfectly timed!
1. Red and Gold
Always a firm favourite, which epitomises everything about a traditional celebration of Christmas, red and gold is right on trend again this year. Red complements the rich, dark green tones of a real Christmas tree, whilst gold adds a touch of elegance and warmth. If you are buying decorations for the first time, a red and gold colour scheme is a great investment as it is a festive staple year after year.
Style Tip: This scheme is easy to tailor to suit your own style, be it nostalgic vintage nutcracker ornaments, deep red baubles and bows with sprays of spruce and eucalyptus for a scented mantel display, or opulent décor vibes inspired by the golden age of Hollywood.
2. Wood Decorations
Wooden decorations are making a big comeback and their diversity means they can be used throughout the home, not just on the tree. Particularly popular are laser-cut wooden decorations, cut and engraved using light. These feature a distinct darker edge on pale wood and ornate detailing. From traditional European Christmas market-style wood decorations and wooden bead garlands for the tree, to wooden ornaments for the window or mantelpiece, their rustic charm adds warmth and style.
Style Tip: Add a touch of magic to a mantelpiece or shelf with a cluster of wooden ornaments designed to have a battery-operated tealight behind.
3. All Things Sustainable
Gaining in popularity over the last few years, the trend towards making Christmas more planet-friendly continues as people become more eco-conscious. Making a big comeback, beautifully crafted retro paper decorations come in all shapes and sizes. Ditch fancy paper crackers in favour of reusable fabric or tin crackers. Reusable advent calendars and fabric gift wrap are also available, helping to reduce paper and plastic waste. Support charity shops and shop local whenever possible. You’ll also save money in the long run.
Style Tip: Upcycle old decorations using chalk paint to give them a new lease of life. Use fabric remnants or repurpose silk square headscarves to make reusable gift wrap. Enlist the kids to help make scented orange and clove tree decorations, or create a hanging star from paper sandwich bags.
4. Roaring Twenties Glamour
A century down the line, the glitz, glamour and sparkle of Art Deco vintage is back in vogue… and as per the Cole Porter musical of the time, ‘Anything Goes’ on the décor front. Gold and silver, crystal, beads, feathers and pearly capiz shell combine to create a dazzling, fun, hedonistic vibe.
Style Tip: Pair these decorations with warm tree lights to avoid the scheme feeling too cool. Easily extend the theme to dining, with vintage tableware, flute glasses and mirrored coasters.
5. Classic Scandinavia
Perfectly complimenting natural materials, this trend embraces a snowy winter wonderland and calming hygge comforts. Key elements are a muted Nordic colour palette with frosted pom-pom snowball baubles on a dusky pine Christmas tree, with glitter, blue-grey tones and icy whites.
Style Tip: Starry garlands, light-up baubles and super-sized fluffy white tinsel will give a magical winter look to your tree. Use calming colours and textured, cosy layers with throws and cushions to extend this scheme, creating a sense of wellness and unwinding at home.
Whatever décor scheme you choose this Christmas, we hope you have fun bringing the festive spirit to your own home!
