The Local Area

Getting around from The Maltings is simplicity itself. A bypass was built around Ilminster a few years ago, so driving through the town centre is quiet and easy. A short drive to the west is the junction of the A303 London to Exeter road with the A358 from Taunton to Chard and Axminster. The M5 motorway (Junction 25) is about ten miles away.

The closest train stations are at Crewkerne, just over 6 miles away, for South West Trains to the west and London Waterloo, and Taunton, for First Great Western services to the north. If you’re heading further afield, Exeter International Airport offers an increasing number of domestic and European flights.

For those with families, the nearest primary school is Swanmead Community School, less than a mile away. The nearest secondary school, which also has a sixth form, is Holyrood Community School, just over 4 miles away.

For sports and exercise, you can’t do better than walking, cycling or even horseriding in the beautiful surrounding countryside. There are several golf courses to choose from, and the closest purpose built leisure and fitness centre is the Stanchester Sports Centre at East Stoke, about 8 miles away.

Taunton is the nearest large town, about 12 miles away – around 25 minutes by car. It offers a wide selection of excellent shops and stores, plus restaurants, bars, cinemas and entertainments of all kinds, including Somerset County Cricket.
