Traditionally a sparsely-populated agricultural county, Dorset’s rural heritage has been well recorded in the writings of its most famous son, Thomas Hardy.  But while the county’s unspoiled villages and countryside are still very much in evidence, today’s Dorset is very different.  Half the population of Dorset now lives the coastal towns of Bournemouth, Pool and Christchurch.

As a place to live, Dorset offers a superb choice of town and country living.  It has several historic towns surrounded by scenic countryside, including Dorchester (the county town), Wimborne, Blandford Forum, Shaftesbury and Sherborne.

Dorset’s coastline hosts a tremendous range of activities, which seems appropriate for the county’s ancient motto: “'Who's Afear'd”.  You’ll find sailing, diving, wind-surfing, kite surfing, parasailing and surfing, to name but a few.  Europe’s first artificial surf reef is now installed in Bournemouth and Weymouth has been chosen as the venue for 2012 Olympics sailing events.

Dorset has some of the best sandy Blue Flag beaches in Britain, as well as some of the most dramatic coastal scenery.  It is famous for the Jurassic Coast World Heritage site where the rocks and cliffs show 180 million years of geological history.  This stretch of coast encompasses the arch at Durdle Door, Lulworth Cove and Chesil Beach.

Poole harbour is one of the world’s largest natural harbours.  Across its mouth lies the Sandbanks peninsular, famed for its excellent beach and exclusive properties.  A chain ferry takes cars across the harbour entrance to the nature reserve at Studland.
