Devon is a great place to live and work. In addition to its beautiful scenery and wonderful beaches, Devon has excellent transportation links to the rest of the country and beyond through motorways, rail and Exeter airport.
Devon is the only county in England to have two separate coastlines, which makes it a major tourist destination. Most of Devon’s seaside resorts are on the milder south coast, where Torbay (marketed as the ‘English Riviera’) is characterised by elegant streets and promenades lined with palm trees. The more windswept northern coastline offers some of the region’s best surfing beaches.
Devon’s two cities, Plymouth and Exeter are both on the south coast and Exeter is the county town where Devon County Council is based. Plymouth has its own City Council and the Torbay conurbation of Torquay, Paignton and Brixham is also administered independently
Between its two coasts, Devon has a great diversity of beautiful landscapes. In addition to the typical rolling hills with grazing cattle and sheep, there is also wild moorland – Exmoor National Park straddling the border with Somerset, and Dartmoor National Park in the south.
In addition to its National Parks, Devon has two World Heritage Sites, five Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Devon also has many picturesque, quaint and historic market towns, including Axminster, Barnstaple, Bideford, Honiton, Newton Abbot, Okehampton, Tavistock, Totnes and Tiverton.
